You don’t have to buy fancy equipment to make candles. All you require is a double-boiler which you can easily make yourself.
Since the beginning, candle-making has been a tradition. The craft began with a need for light. Today, it is used to create home fragrances and decor.
It is not difficult to master the basics of skills. However, it takes time.

Candle Making Basics
Candle making starts with mixing wax and scent in a container. Then, once the wax has hardened, light it by using a wire wick.
Technically, “cooling”, or “curing”, refers to “cooling”. Each candle requires at least one of these materials:
- Wax
- Fragrance Oil
- Wick
- Container or mold
Once you have all these items in place, you can make almost any type of candle.
The most widely used candle type for this purpose is the Container Candle. Here, the wax blend is contained in a container.
Container candles make it easy because there are so many containers to choose from.
A candle can be held in any container, even a soda bottle. is a guideline for safety.
Candle flames can be very hot! You don’t want to use anything which could set the world ablaze.
If you purchase a candle-making kit or gather a few supplies from a local craft store to make your candles, you’re likely to end up using paraffin or soybean wax.
Candle-making can be described as a five-step process.
- Check out your supplies
- Place wax in a heat source to melt it
- You can prepare containers with wicks
- To melt the wax, add fragrance oil or color at the specified temperature
- Put the wax blend in the containers.
What is a Double Boiler exactly?
A double boiler can melt something inside a container sitting in a boiling pan of water.
Most double boilers can be broken down into three main parts:
- Heat source: For example, a stovetop or hot plate
- Pot of boiling water (thus the “boiling”) feature
- Potter or measuring glass in the pot
A pour pot or measuring jar is used for candle-making. The larger pot holds water and is placed on top of a stovetop.
You can use any wax as long your container can withstand boiling water at 212°F (or 100°C)
Aluminum pour pots are one of the most commonly used items by candle makers. These can hold enough wax so that you can make small candles from two to six.
Pros
Your risk of scorching wax is significantly lower as a double boiler seldom reaches the boiling point.
It is easy to put together – you can do it in minutes!
Cost-effective because you don’t have to purchase any extra materials. Most people have a spare glass of measuring and a large container.
This method comes with some disadvantages, including:
There is a limit on the batch size because the pot and measuring glass can only hold so little.
This makes it much slower to melt the wax since the water boils slowly and only reaches 212°F (100°C).
Because you can only control temperature and not the steady “hold” temperature, it is difficult to regulate the water temperature.
Equipment & Supplies
Get the following equipment before you start. You will find most of these items at your local craft center in the candle-making section.
You can use any kind of fragrance oil and wax that you like, as well as essential oils. There are no restrictions on colors. You can use a water-soluble dye to color.
